The Blue Book Essay Approach
Our mission is admission.
We will help your student create a personal essay that stands out in the stacks of thousands read by admissions committees. If grades and course rigor open the first door, and scores the second door, essays open the third door. Strong writing, diverse perspective and critical thinking are deciding factors in choosing one student over another.
Admissions committees want to get to know your kids as human beings, not numbers. With more schools going test-optional, college essays are more critical than ever. At Blue Book, we are not college admissions counselors. We are professional writers and experienced branders who are expert at finding and developing the most powerful story for each student.

The essay ecosystem.
A student applies to most schools via the Common App or Coalition App, both of which can use the same main essay. In addition, most colleges require one to four supplemental essays that give them the opportunity to ask their own questions. We help create an ecosystem of essays – topics that highlight different strengths and accomplishments, shape a standout profile and can often be repurposed for various schools.

Time for kick off.
We start with a lively one-hour brainstorming session, in person or on FaceTime. Before we begin, the student supplies the following: list of schools, essay prompts for various schools, and the corresponding word counts and due dates. On the heels of that meeting, you will receive a Prompts & Premises synopsis of ideas, as well as our recommendations for which to pursue.

Get ready to work hard but have fun.
Honestly, every kid walks out of our first meeting psyched to get started, because they realize they have great stories to tell. Then our creative process unfolds over Google docs, text, phone and email, in-person meetings — whatever works best. Personal information is confidential, and we make sure every student feels proud of their essays.

Parents are involved at three stages.
First, we welcome your ideas early on. No one knows your highschooler better than you. Then we share the Prompts & Premises document and agree on which ideas to pursue. Finally, you see the final essays and react to them. To have more than one adult involved in the development of the essay overwhelms a teenager. Even the brainstorming session needs to be one-on-one. Thank you in advance for honoring that.

Re: Rewriting.
We love helping essays go from good to great and are tireless about the editing process. That’s because it pays off in the end. Not a single student goes just two or three rounds — and not one student or parent has regretted it. Unlike some coaches, Blue Book doesn’t limit the number of revisions.
